PUMPKIN PROJECT

Hello parents,

To celebrate the month of October and pumpkin season, I am asking families in room D7 to bring one pumpkin to school. You can bring it during the week of Oct 20th-Oct 24th. It can be as little or as big as you want! We will be doing many activities with it: In math, we will use it to estimate and measure it’s weight and circumference. In science, we will learn about the pumpkin life cycle and what pumpkins need to survive. We will also write a description of our pumpkin! Students will learn a lot and have fun at the same time. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

THE WRITE THING TO DO!

This week we will be working on our first writing project. Today I introduced the writing process (very basic) and they will begin writing their “sloppy copy” very soon. We go through three basic steps when writing a paper… we write our sloppy copy, we edit it, and finally we write our clean copy to be published.

I strongly encourage you (parents) to have your child write at home to support our writing activities at school. They can write about almost anything: an adventure they had, a happy memory, what they have learned at school, a made up story, etc. The important thing is that they put their ideas on paper. The writing project that we started today is about their favorite animal. You might want to try writing about animals too!

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to come see me:)

Thank you!

Dear parents,

I want to give special thanks to all the family members who came to Back-to-school night last Tuesday. I greatly appreciate it. I was glad to finally meet some of my students’ parents :) I know some of you could not come because of work schedules, etc. However, if you still want to meet with me, please feel free to come to our classroom and I will gladly share with you what I shared Tuesday night.

The first day of school

It was a busy day today! I finally met my group and I am very proud of all of them. First grade has longer days, so the first few weeks are always hard for them. It looks like we have great chemistry and we’ll be getting a long great!
Today we did getting to know each other routines, but tomorrow and for the rest of these two upcoming weeks we’ll be doing a quick kinder review.

If you can, please practice at home:

  • the alphabet: how to write correctly the letters of the alphabet (lower case and capitals) and the sounds for each of the letters of the alphabet
  • write letters in the right lines nice and neat
  • write their names correctly
  • numbers 1-20: say the numbers in order, show the correct amount (maybe using some chips)
  • show the meaning of zero (nothing)

Thanks!

BACK TO SCHOOL!

Classes begin August 25!!

I am very excited to begin this new school year. I can’t wait for it to start! All the teachers at our school already started working to prepare everything for the BIG day :)   Today I got the list of all the names of the little ones that will be in my class :D I hope that every one of them is as excited as I am to begin this great year together :)

I am very pleased to have this technology available to communicate with all my parents and students. Blogging is something that we recently implemented at our school and we are very excited about it. Hopefully, everyone has a chance to look at it often and get information about all the different things happening at our school and in our classroom! I’ll try my best to keep it updated.
I’ll include information about CURRENT SCHOOL WORK IN READING, MATH, WRITING, SPELLING, etc. Also AFTER-SCHOOL and SCHOOL EVENTS information.
It’s very easy to access my blog. Just to go www.palmerway.org and find the link for Ms. Ortiz and it will take you there!

Hope you like it!
